Workship Participant Ideas

Table of Contents | NCCAP/NCTRC CE Booklet

The following is a summary of suggestions from the group attending the seminar on the DVD.
1. Kai suggested using food and alcohol as a motivator to encourage residents to relax and socialize.
2. Jonnie suggested using kids and outings, for example having a pancake breakfast outing.
3. Marianne suggested out of facility activities, and having speakers come in who are ‘authorities’ on subjects that may interest difficult to motivate male residents.
4. Leanne suggested a ‘Casino Night’, using residents as dealers. Residents who won ‘money’ could then exchange their winnings for prizes. Leanne also suggested football night with wine, cheese, and hors d’oeuvres.
5. Diana suggested a current events discussion with coffee, and a sports discussion group.
6. Pam suggested using past interests and occupations as a motivator, for example giving a previous accountant access to an old ledger book. She also suggested using past clubs, such as the Elks or the Rotary Clubs, as a motivator. Volunteers, or active members of these organizations, could bring residents to meetings once a month.
7. Pat suggested a Creative Movement class using Western-style music.  He also suggested giving residents an opportunity to help bake cookies or angel food cake, soup tasting parties, and pie baking.
8. Paul suggested pairing off residents according to common interests.  He also suggested a related Reminiscence Group using short films to encourage discussion.
9. Anita suggested ‘Happy Hour,’ Casino Night, or Poker Night.  She also suggested having a Men’s Breakfast.  Anita also stated that the American Legion came in to visit veterans at her facility and took them to local sporting events.
10. Kathy suggested a Food and Drink social, including beer or wine.  She also suggested using touch as positive reassurance, including a prize for the ‘Most Huggable’ resident.
11. Colleen suggested animals and children as motivators. She also suggested music as a motivator for male residents.
Below write the names of residents who might be motivated by one of the "Ideas Suggested" above.  Then, duplicate this table in Word, Excel, or a notebook and list additional residents.
