Geometric Puzzle

Sometimes Caps-in-a-Bowl, the Bank Exercise, Color Sorting, and Color Pattern Cards are not difficult enough to provide your resident with the feeling of success that you are trying to have your resident experience.  So try the Geometric Puzzle.

Materials and Construction
The Geometric Puzzle is constructed by cutting 6" x 8" pieces of corrugated cardboard and gluing light colored construction paper to them.  After the construction paper has been glued to your corrugated cardboard rectangles, glue various geometric designs, made with contrasting colored construction paper, onto the center of each of your cards.  For example, I have a geometric puzzle that has a yellow background with a square in the middle that is green on one half and black on the other half.  For the puzzle pieces, the resident takes a corresponding green rectangle and places it over the green half of the square, then takes a black rectangle and places that over the black half of the square. Illustrated to the right in row 1.  I have another Geometric Puzzle that has an orange background with a green circle and a yellow pie wedge shape. Illustrated to the right in row two.  Corresponding circle and pie wedge shapes are cut out of cardboard, and green and yellow construction paper is glued to them.   A layer of clear contact paper might be added to your Puzzle card to provide a more durable finish.

Adaptations Based Upon Changing the Materials
Another design in my Geometric Puzzle set is an orange background with a green right triangle. This card is illustrated to the right in row two.  This is probably the easiest puzzle because the resident just takes the corresponding piece, and places it over the triangle.

On another card, I have a circle that is yellow on one half and orange on the other, with a black background.  This card is illustrated to the left. The color contrast between the black background and the orange and yellow half circles makes it easier for the resident to see the shape.

23cThe most difficult card I have in my set has a yellow background with three right triangles.  One right triangle is orange, the second right triangle is black, and the third right triangle is green.  I then have three corresponding right triangles that the resident places over the three geometric shapes.

So, similar to Color Pattern Cards, where your resident places the red gallon milk bottle cap on the red dot, this is an adaptation that is higher on the Difficulty Scale.

Two Skills Needed
By doing Color Pattern Cards, you are asking your resident to combine two skills.  First, he or she needs the skill found in Color Sorting by matching the corresponding colors.  Second, unlike Color Pattern Cards in which the directional placement of circular caps does not make a difference, in the Geometric Puzzle your resident needs to be able to manipulate the puzzle piece to correctly match the direction of the shape on the card.

How to Motivate Your Resident
A way to motivate your resident to do the Geometric Puzzle is by saying, “I have a game for you, let’s see if you want to play a game today.”  A sample Care Plan Goal would be…

Goal: To do a Geometric Puzzle with one geometric shape…

To adapt the activity to be more difficult, the Care Plan Goal would be…

Goal:  To do a Geometric Puzzle with 3 or 4 geometric shapes…

An Approach for a resident with visual problems would be…

Approach:  To provide a Geometric Puzzle with a black or dark background and a light …

Some may find a Geometric Puzzle too hard, so you might try Shape Sorting.

Residents with whom to try a Geometric Puzzle

Culture Change Implementation: Place Geometric Puzzle in Activity Project Bag left in resident’s room for CNA, volunteer, etc. use.
